Accomplishments

As of October 2007, we have taken in 2550 computers, and delivered 2100 to families and community organizations in the Washington, DC area. No aspect of our program is more rewarding than watching the eyes of an eight- or nine-year-old light up when they push the power button on their "new" computer for the first time and see the screen come alive.

We have set up ongoing relationships with several sister organizations, including Capitol Hill Computer Corner, the Carlos Rosario International School, Computers for Communities, Digital Bridge, and Byte Back in the Washington, DC area. We have provided a number of computers to early childhood learning centers, about 100 desktops to date.

We have given laptops to several dozen college-bound high school seniors and college students from low-income areas. We provided desktops as prizes to winners of a "Gear Up" essay contest at local charter schools. We are piloting a project to provide "Internet Scholarships" for a one-year period to families who cannot afford an Internet connection.

In the summer of 2006, we launched a training program in computer refurbishing and repair for unemployed youth. All of the refurbishers employed at First Time Computers are at-risk kids who have gone through our training program.

The Harman Family Foundation selected First Time Computers for inclusion in its 2007-2008 Catalogue for Philanthropy - Greater Washington. The Catalogue highlights a carefully chosen group of up-and-coming non-profits each year.
